US Secretary of State Antony Blinken Highlights "Significant Progress" in Azerbaijani-Armenian Peace Negotiations

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Munich, emphasized the "significant progress" made towards a peace agreement between Baku and Yerevan, according to the State Department. The US believes that the two countries have a rare opportunity to secure a lasting peace after over 30 years of conflict. Blinken said, "The parties themselves have renewed their focus on a peace process, including through direct conversation as well as with the EU and ourselves."

The State Department further noted that Blinken "took note of the significant progress the two sides have made over the last several months towards a peace agreement and the offer of EU President Charles Michel to host the parties in Brussels" and underscored the need for free and open commercial and private transit through the Lachin corridor.

Blinken also tweeted later that he was "pleased to hear that the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process is on track and negotiations between the two sides are continuing." The Secretary assured that the US is committed to doing anything possible to support these efforts, either directly with friends, in a trilateral format such as this, or with other international partners.
