Turkey earthquake: Death toll reaches 36,187 as international rescue efforts
19 February 2023
Turkey is still reeling from the aftermath of the devastating earthquake, with the death toll rising to 36,187, according to the head of the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), Yunus Sezer. The disaster has prompted an outpouring of support from around the world, with 80 countries sending search and rescue teams to assist in the efforts. While some teams have already completed their work, the search and rescue operations are still ongoing as authorities work to find and assist anyone who may still be trapped in the rubble.
In addition to the rescue efforts, financial support is being provided to affected families, with each family receiving 10,000 liras ($530.5) in aid. While this is not a complete solution to the damage caused by the earthquake, Sezer noted that the goal is to provide at least partial support to the victims. The disaster has caused widespread devastation throughout the region, and the recovery effort is expected to be ongoing for some time.
