Most of Iran's population speaks Azeri -- Sahiba Gafarova

Baku/10.01.23/Turan: Azerbaijani and Iranian Parliamentary Speakers Sahiba Gafarova and Mohammad Bagher Galibaf met on January 9 at the 13th plenary session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly in Antalya.
During the meeting the parties exchanged views on topical issues of bilateral agenda, including the situation in the region in the post-conflict period and other topics of mutual interest.
Gafarova informed of Azerbaijan's initiatives towards ensuring peace and security in the region and the development of cooperation. The meeting also discussed the current state of inter-parliamentary relations, Milli Majlis reported.
In turn, the IRNA news agency reported that Galibaf emphasized Azerbaijan's special importance for the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Besides, the high-ranking Iranian official went on to reiterate the tired thesis that interference by "extra-regional countries" is unacceptable, and that Iran does not accept "any geopolitical changes of borders in the region."
"We stick to the clear position on the development of relations with Azerbaijan, and we are ready to develop trade and transit ties with Azerbaijan," he said.
In turn, Gafarova invited Galibaf to visit Azerbaijan. "We are brought together not only by geography, common borders, and faith, but also by the fact that a large part of the Iranian population speaks Azeri," the IRNA news agency quoted Gafarova as saying.
