President of the European Council Charles Michel discusses regional security with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev in phone call

President of the European Council Charles Michel spoke with President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on March 25, discussing various issues including their meeting on February 17, 2023, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, and the trilateral meetings held from December 14, 2021 to August 31, 2022.

During the call, Charles Michel expressed the European Union's continued efforts to ensure lasting peace and security in the region. He also raised concerns over recent incidents on the state border of Armenia and Azerbaijan, particularly those related to the Lachin-Khankendi road of Azerbaijan.

President Ilham Aliyev reaffirmed Azerbaijan's support for the Brussels process and dismissed claims made by Armenia regarding the alleged closure of the Lachin-Khankendi road as false. He emphasized that thousands of vehicles have passed through the road since December 12, 2022, including those belonging to the Russian peacekeepers and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

However, the Azerbaijani leader also raised concerns over Armenia's transportation of ammunition and personnel to the territory of Azerbaijan where Russian peacekeeping forces are temporarily deployed. He pointed out that recent provocations by Armenia, including the wounding of a State Border Service serviceman on March 20, 2023, and the martyrdom of two more servicemen on March 5, were a result of the dangerous policy pursued by Armenia.

The conversation between the two leaders highlights ongoing tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and the European Union's efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region.
