What will happen on December 26th in Lachin?
25 December 2022
Starting on Saturday, Russian peacekeepers began to turn off the upper checkpoint at the entrance to Shusha from Lachin (there is now an action of activists).
First, they removed two large tents, and on Sunday morning they began to dismantle two metal containers. Thus, in fact, the peacekeepers liquidated their part of the checkpoint, from which only a couple of concrete slabs remained on the road.
At the same time, the checkpoint on the Azerbaijani side has grown and not only due to the tents of eco-activists who have been standing on the road for the 14th day.
The day before, up to 200 Armenians marched from Khankyandi to the lower checkpoint of the peacekeepers and handed them a statement demanding to remove the Azerbaijanis from the road.
According to the Armenian media, on Saturday the command of the peacekeepers told the separatist leaders that on December 26 the Lachin road would be opened.
On the same day, Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Ilham Aliyev and, according to the official report, they discussed security issues at the border.
If compare all these events, one can assume that the peacekeepers' checkpoint at the entrance to Shusha from Lachin (the upper entrance) will be liquidated and the Azerbaijani checkpoint will remain there. As for the lower checkpoint near Shusha (from the side of Khankyandi), apparently, the peacekeepers remain there for the time being.
The discussion between Putin and Aliyev of security at the border may mean that on the 26th the same “mini-customs” will start working, which was announced two weeks ago by the commander of the peacekeepers, General Volkov.
If all of the above happens, this means that the regime of entry and exit from Karabakh passes under the control of Azerbaijan in agreement with the Russian side.
