UN: Nearly 22,000 civilian casualties in Ukraine conflict
07 March 2023
According to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), since Russia's large-scale military intervention in Ukraine, 21,793 civilian casualties have been recorded, with 8,173 killed and 13,620 injured. In just the month of February 2023, OHCHR recorded 589 civilian casualties in Ukraine, including 138 killed and 451 injured. Explosive weapons with wide area effects, mines, and explosive remnants of war were cited as the primary reasons for these casualties.
The OHCHR has stated that the actual number of casualties is likely to be higher, as information from some locations where intense hostilities have been ongoing has been delayed and reports are still pending corroboration. The cities of Mariupol (Donetsk region), Lysychansk, Popasna, and Sievierodonetsk (Luhansk region) are specifically mentioned as locations with allegations of numerous civilian casualties.
