Turkish opposition's presidential candidate leads by 10 points in polls ahead of historic election

Turkish opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu is leading against President Tayyip Erdogan by over 10 percentage points ahead of the country's May 14 presidential elections, according to new polls. The polls also show the Nation Alliance, a coalition of opposition parties, leading the parliamentary race with at least a six-point advantage over Erdogan's AK Party and its allies. The pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party remains comfortably above 10%. Erdogan, who has been in power for 20 years, faces the biggest challenge to his rule after his popularity eroded during a cost-of-living crisis. The election is considered the most consequential vote in Turkey's history as it will decide not just who leads the country but how it is governed, its economic direction, and its role in easing conflict in Ukraine and the Middle East.
