NATO stands in solidarity with Ukraine on the first anniversary of Russia's war
24 February 2023
NATO issued a statement marking the one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which they describe as the gravest threat to Euro-Atlantic security in decades. The alliance reaffirmed its support for the Ukrainian government and people, condemning the tragic human suffering and destruction caused by Russia's illegal war. NATO is stepping up its political and practical support to help Ukraine defend itself against the invasion, coordinating closely with relevant stakeholders, including the EU. The alliance remains committed to supporting Ukraine's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Russia bears full responsibility for the war, violating international law and the UN Charter. NATO calls on Russia to engage constructively in credible negotiations with Ukraine, but it has not shown any genuine openness to a just and lasting peace. NATO condemns all those who are actively facilitating Russia's war and demands that Russia immediately stop the conflict and withdraw all of its military forces from Ukraine. NATO is committed to strengthening its deterrence and defense posture, ready to defend every inch of Allied territory. The alliance remains determined to maintain coordinated international pressure on Russia and to assist countries most exposed to Russia's malign influence.
