Milli Majlis Chair Sahiba Gafarova Holds Meeting with ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly Secretary General

Sahiba Gafarova, Chair of the Milli Majlis, is currently on a working visit to the capital of the Kingdom of Bahrain, Manama. As a part of her visit, Gafarova held a meeting with Siti Rozaimeriyanty Dato Haji Abdul Rahman, Secretary General of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly.
During the meeting, Gafarova highlighted the high standards of cooperation between the Azerbaijani legislature and the AIPA, and the Milli Majlis' status as an observer with the AIPA. It was noted that our country's application was approved immediately, while other parliaments usually had to wait 2-3 years for this status.
As Chair of the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement, Gafarova expressed her Network's eagerness to establish active ties with inter-parliamentary entities including AIPA. She mentioned the broad international support for the substantive initiatives proposed by Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev, in his capacity as NAM Chair. The NAM Parliamentary Network, which was a fruit of one such initiative, is attracting increasing international attention. Gafarova also highlighted the Network's cooperation with other inter-parliamentary organizations, as it has become an observer in three inter-parliamentary entities: the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, the Parliamentary Union of OIC Member States, and the Arab Parliament.
The Secretary General of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly praised Azerbaijan's successful presidency of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network, emphasizing the broad international support for our country's efforts to ensure the Network's institutional development.
After exchanging views on several issues of mutual interest, the meeting concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement and the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly.
