Iran sees renewed protests as calls for regime change grow louder

Protests have erupted across Iran once again, with demonstrators calling for the overthrow of the Islamic Republic. The marches, which took place in numerous cities including Tehran on Thursday evening, continued through the night and were reportedly sparked by the recent executions of two protesters. The rallies mark 40 days since the deaths of Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Mohammad Hosseini, who were hanged on Jan. 8. Videos posted online showed large-scale demonstrations in cities such as Tehran, Karaj, and Isfahan, among others. The recent unrest is part of a wider wave of protests that began last September following the death in custody of Kurdish Iranian woman Mahsa Amini.
