Head of EU Mission in Armenia Criticized for Comments on Imaginary Attack

The Western Azerbaijan Community has criticized Markus Ritter, the head of the Mission of the European Union in Armenia, for comments suggesting that Azerbaijan might launch an imaginary attack on Armenia. The community accused Ritter of trying to portray Armenia as a victim and Azerbaijan in a negative light, despite Azerbaijan being the victim of Armenia's military aggression, occupation, and ethnic cleansing.

The community also reminded Ritter of the EU mission's mandate to address human rights violations, particularly those suffered by Azerbaijanis expelled from Armenia. The majority of settlements in the border zone where the EU mission is deployed are places where Azerbaijanis used to live and were subjected to ethnic cleansing.

The community urged the mission to fulfill its mandate by contributing to the safe return of ethnic Azerbaijanis, gathering information on the impact of the conflict on their rights, implementing confidence-building measures, and developing programs relating to international humanitarian law and human rights.

The community believes that the EU, including its mission in Armenia, should facilitate respect for the rights of Azerbaijani expellees from Armenia and help attain lasting peace through impartial and comprehensive efforts in the field of human rights.
