06 March 2023
The European Union has successfully overcome its reliance on oil and gas supplies from Russia, according to Ursula von der Leyen, head of the European Commission. Von der Leyen said that 80% of Russian gas exports were fully compensated for by supplies from the US and Norway. She added that this achievement was the result of hard work. Eurostat data shows that from August 2022 to January 2023, gas consumption in Europe fell by 19% compared to the average for the same period in the last five years.
