EU expresses concern over Azerbaijan's new law on political parties

The European Union has raised concerns over the introduction of new restrictions on political parties in Azerbaijan. The EU warns that such measures could have a detrimental effect on political pluralism and fundamental rights, including freedom of association, expression, and peaceful assembly.

These rights are crucial for the functioning of a democratic society, and the EU is urging Azerbaijan to address the longstanding recommendations made by the Council of Europe Venice Commission on the previous law on political parties. The EU is also calling for Azerbaijan to address the recommendations outlined in the Venice Commission and OSCE/ODHIR Opinion of 13 March on this new law.

Political parties are essential instruments for political expression, representing the political will of citizens. The EU stresses that it is crucial to ensure vibrant, accountable, and inclusive multiparty systems to uphold democracy.

The EU's statement highlights the importance of protecting fundamental rights and freedoms, as well as promoting political pluralism and democratic values in Azerbaijan.
