Azerbaijani Official Voices Concerns Over Inclusion of New Items in Mandate of EU Mission on Border

Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Department of the Presidential Administration, Hikmat Hajiyev, expressed concern over the inclusion of new items in the mandate of the EU mission on the border with Armenia. He stated that the addition of new items was unexpected and created distrust for Azerbaijan.

Hajiyev also pointed out that the mission included former military and police officers, and was not just a civilian mission as stated. He emphasized the need to take into account Azerbaijan's position and concerns since the mission was located on the border with Azerbaijan.

Recent incidents have added to Azerbaijan's concerns, with the Armenian army firing at Azerbaijani positions on the conditional border. Hajiyev accused Armenia of provoking Azerbaijan to fire back, with the goal of creating a false impression for the EU mission and exacerbating the situation. He suggested that Armenia may be using the mission's presence to focus on continuing its destructive activities in Karabakh.

Hajiyev stressed that the South Caucasus region should not be an arena for geopolitical rivalry and urged Armenia to take a different position.
