Azerbaijani Army Takes Control Measures to Prevent Illegal Activities
25 March 2023
The Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Azerbaijan has reported that on March 25, the Azerbaijani army units took appropriate control measures to prevent the use of unpaved roads north of the Lachin road for illegal activities. The measures were also aimed at preventing further escalation of the situation and potential provocations by the transportation of weapons and ammunition to the territories of Azerbaijan by Armenia.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan has said that in recent days, the transportation of military personnel, weapons and ammunition, landmines, as well as other military equipment for the Armenia's Armed Forces in the territory of Azerbaijan, where the Russian Peacekeeping Contingent is temporarily deployed, has intensified. In addition, illegal road construction works by Armenians on the Khankendi-Khalfali-Turshsu road and Khankendi-Kosalar-Mirzeler-Turshsu road that passes north of this route have been activated.
Despite numerous appeals from Azerbaijan and discussions held in this regard, no necessary measures have been taken to prevent the transportation of weapons and other military equipment. The provocations by Armenia on March 5 and March 20, resulting in the martyrdom and injury of Azerbaijani servicemen, demonstrate Armenia's intention to deliberately aggravate the situation.
Furthermore, the aggressive rhetoric of the Armenian leadership in recent days, including repeated statements against Azerbaijan's sovereignty and territorial integrity, highlights that Armenia has not yet given up its territorial claims against Azerbaijan. These steps by Armenia have shown its intention to disrupt the peace process and its lack of interest in ensuring peace and stability in the region.
Azerbaijan calls upon Armenia to refrain from provocative actions and statements that aggravate the situation in the region and to fulfill its obligations instead of continuing to try to confuse the international community. The recent provocations by Armenia demonstrate that the establishment of a border control checkpoint between Azerbaijan and Armenia at the end point of the Lachin road is necessary to prevent illegal activities in the sovereign territories of Azerbaijan.
