Armenia denounces Azerbaijani President's border statement as "act of aggression"

Armenian Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, has described Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's statement on the delimitation of the border as "an act of aggression" and a "gross violation of the agreements reached at the highest level." The statement was made at a government meeting on Thursday, March 23.

Pashinyan referenced previous agreements on mutual recognition of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and inviolability of borders, in accordance with the UN Charter and the 1991 Almaty Declaration. He further stated that the borders of the Soviet republics have become their state borders and that Azerbaijan's insistence on delimitation based on historical maps is "absolutely unacceptable."

Armenia believes that "international mechanisms are necessary" for the implementation of these agreements. Pashinyan also accused Azerbaijan of pursuing a policy of ethnic cleansing and genocide and cited the demolition of Armenian houses and building of houses for Azerbaijanis in Nagorno-Karabakh.

However, Pashinyan concluded the meeting by stating that there would be an agreement on peace with Azerbaijan, which would be based on written documents reached so far at the highest level.
