Tanzania flash floods leave 1,800 homeless in Mtwara region

Flash floods in Tanzania's southern region of Mtwara have left at least 1,800 people homeless, according to Ahmed Abbas, the Mtwara regional commissioner. The floods were caused by heavy rains upstream, causing the Ruvuma River to overfill and submerge over 150 houses in Maurunga and Kilambo wards in Mtwara district. Abbas stated that 528 households have been affected and the victims have been sheltered in primary schools while relief supplies, including tents and food, are being organized. Additionally, the flash floods destroyed more than 100 hectares of farm crops, including maize and potatoes, in the affected areas. Abbas said that authorities are still assessing the extent of the damage to the farms caused by the flash floods.
