Russian President Vladimir Putin Signs Decree Increasing Maximum Sentence for Treason to Life in Jail
29 April 2023
Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree formally increasing the maximum sentence for treason to life in jail, as part of a wider effort to suppress dissent since the start of the war in Ukraine. Lawmakers had already voted to increase the longest sentences for treason to life, up from 20 years.
In addition, the maximum sentence for carrying out a terrorist act aimed at destabilizing Russia has been raised to 20 years, while those found guilty of sabotage could face up to 20 years in jail. The maximum sentence for "international terrorism" has also been increased to life, up from 12 years.
Rights groups have criticized the new decree, saying that it is part of a wider effort to silence opposition voices in Russia. However, the government has defended the laws, saying that they are necessary to protect the country from infiltration by Ukraine and Western intelligence agencies. The decree did not explain what is meant by "international terrorism."
