Russian industry unexpectedly rebounds with strong military production

Russian industrial production has unexpectedly rebounded for the first time in a year, with a strong performance from sectors associated with military production, amid rising spending on the invasion of Ukraine. In March, industrial production was up 1.2% from a year earlier, exceeding the expected 1.4% decline, according to the Federal Statistics Service. While mining and resource extraction were down 3.6%, manufacturing was up over 6%, with a 30% gain in "finished metal goods," which includes arms and ammunition. Other sectors like computers, electronic and optical products also grew by 23%. Furthermore, the production of combat vehicles, aircraft, and ships under the "other transport" category increased more than 10% for the second month in a row. This surge in military production follows a boom in government spending earlier this year that officials said was linked to unspecified contracts.
