Since the start of the war in Ukraine, over 5 million Ukrainians have received temporary protection status in various European countries, according to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. The number of Ukrainian citizens who have been granted official protection status in European countries continues to increase, with 185,000 people receiving status from January 31 through March 28, 2023. Poland has the largest number of Ukrainians with temporary protection status, with over 1.57 million people. Germany and the Czech Republic follow with 922,000 and 502,000 respectively. Other countries with significant numbers of Ukrainian refugees include the UK, Italy, Spain, and Romania. France, Finland, and Denmark have also received thousands of Ukrainian refugees. While some refugees have returned home or resettled elsewhere, over 8 million Ukrainian refugees have fled to Europe since February 2022.
