Minister Lavrov has proposed that Russia conduct inspections on all transportation utilizing the Lachin road

Russia has proposed implementing strict checks on all vehicles travelling along the Lachin road to ensure they are not carrying prohibited non-humanitarian cargo, according to a statement made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at a press conference on January 18th. The minister emphasized that, in accordance with a trilateral agreement signed on November 9th, 2020, the Lachin corridor should be open for the passage of goods belonging to citizens and vehicles.
“Of course, it was separately agreed that no military cargo should be sent along this route. The Azerbaijanis provided data, and now our military is studying it, that the Armenian side delivered mines along this corridor. Then these mines were used to mine the territory near the Azerbaijani positions in violation of the agreements," Lavrov said.
According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the Russian side has proposed a solution to the current situation on the Lachin road. “We proposed a very simple thing. The peacekeeping contingent that Russia sent there has the authority to control this movement. And the contingent has every opportunity to check each vehicle for the absence of prohibited non-humanitarian, non-civilian goods in it.
Yesterday or the day before yesterday, a meeting of representatives of Azerbaijan with representatives of Karabakh took place with the participation of the commander of the Russian contingent. I think that the issue will be resolved in the near future,” Lavrov said.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that the deployment of the EU mission on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border without the consent of Azerbaijan is counter-productive.
"Despite the fact that we are allies, that the CSTO mission is fully prepared, the Armenian side prefers to negotiate with the EU so that a mission of civilian observers is stationed there on a long-term basis," he said. "This is the border with Azerbaijan, and, probably, if this mission is unfold without the consent of Azerbaijan, it can simply be counterproductive. Instead of building confidence on the border, it can create additional irritants," Lavrov said.
Additionally, Minister Lavrov announced Russia's readiness to deploy a CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization) mission to the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan. "We still remain ready to send a CSTO mission to the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan," he said.
