Kazakhstan Government Resigns Ahead of New Parliament's First Session
29 March 2023
The government of Kazakhstan has resigned before the start of the first session of the VIII convocation of Parliament. The announcement was made through a presidential decree published on the Akorda website.
The decree, in accordance with the Constitution of Kazakhstan and the Constitutional Law on the government, orders the government to fulfill its duties until a new composition is approved by the newly elected lower house of Parliament.
Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov had earlier announced that the Cabinet of Ministers would resign to the newly elected lower house. All members of the government will continue to perform their duties until a new government is formed.
Smailov's government was formed shortly after the January protests and had been in office for over a year. The resignation comes as the new Parliament convenes, and the country prepares for a new chapter in its political landscape.
