Iran Identified as Main Source of Cyber Attacks on Azerbaijan in 2022, Joint EU-Council of Europe Report Finds
26 April 2023
A joint analytical report by the European Union and the Council of Europe titled "Barometer of Cybercrime and Cybersecurity in Azerbaijan" has revealed that Iran launched cyber attacks on Azerbaijan's cyberspace in 2022, exacerbating already tense relations between the two countries.
According to the report, Azerbaijan identified the source of 25 cyber attacks last year, of which 24 were traced back to Iran and one to the Netherlands. The issue of cybersecurity has become one of the most serious problems and challenges for Azerbaijan's national security.
The country's relevant structures are currently working to counter potential cyber-attacks from Iran, Armenia, and Russia. The ruling New Azerbaijan Party was the first to report the cyber attacks, which were later traced back to IP addresses in Iran. A month later, reports emerged that the websites of Azerbaijan Airlines CJSC (AZAL) and a TV channel were also targeted by Iranian hackers.
As Azerbaijan continues to strengthen its cybersecurity measures, the report highlights the need for international cooperation to combat cybercrime and protect the security of all nations.
