EU Foreign Policy Chief criticizes Russia's UN Security Council presidency
02 April 2023
Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy and Security Affairs, has criticized Russia's takeover of the UN Security Council presidency in a tweet. Borrell stated that Russia taking over the presidency on April Fool's Day is fitting, given its continuous violation of the UN legal framework.
Borrell also added that the EU will stand against any abuse by Russia's presidency and will continue to oppose any actions that undermine the UN's core principles.
Russia, as a permanent member of the Security Council, assumes the presidency on a rotating basis, and its current presidency began on April 1st. The EU has been critical of Russia's actions in recent years, including its annexation of Crimea and its involvement in the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine.
