CoE Committee of Ministers launches procedure for suspending Russia's membership

The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has decided to deprive Russia of the right to representation in the Committee of Ministers and in the Parliamentary Assembly, Report informs, citing the official website of the Council of Europe.

"In accordance with the Statute of the Council of Europe, the Committee of Ministers today decided to deprive the Russian Federation of the right to representation in the Committee of Ministers and in the Parliamentary Assembly with immediate effect as a result of the armed attack of the Russian Federation on Ukraine.

The decision taken today means that the Russian Federation remains a member of the Council of Europe and a party to relevant Council of Europe conventions, including the European Convention on Human Rights.

At the same time, as Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki wrote on Twitter on Friday, "The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, on the initiative of Ukraine and Poland, launched the procedure for suspending Russia's membership in the Council of Europe. The final decision will be coming soon."
