Biden administration condemns Russian detention of American journalist on espionage charges

The Biden administration has expressed its "deep concern" over the detention of American journalist Evan Gershkovich by Russian authorities on espionage charges. Gershkovich, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, is the first American journalist to be arrested in Moscow on such charges since September 1986. Secretary of State Antony Blinken condemned the Kremlin's "continued attempts to intimidate, repress, and punish journalists and civil society voices." The administration officials have been in touch with Gershkovich's family, his newspaper, and Russia's government. The State Department has warned American citizens in Russia to leave due to the country's escalating repression against journalists and civil society voices.
