Azerbaijani satellite "Azersky" fails after collision with space debris or meteorite

The Azerbaijani satellite "Azersky" has failed after colliding with space debris or a small meteorite, according to a statement from the country's space agency "Azerkosmos" on April 20. The agency attempted to restore communication with the satellite but was unsuccessful.

Manufactured and transferred to Azerbaijan by French company Airbus Defense and Space, "Azersky" was launched into orbit in June 2014 and was used for national security, defense, environmental protection, emergency situations, oil and gas sector, land reclamation, water management and controlling the situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.

During its operation, "Azersky" generated an income of 105 million manats, with satellite images worth 150 million manats transferred to Azerbaijan's state structures. "Azerkosmos" noted that the income was 1.5 times higher than the funds invested in the satellite, and it was insured for 45 million manats.

Azerbaijan also owns two more telecommunications satellites - "Azerspace-1," launched in 2013, and "Azerspace-2," launched in 2018. In 2020, various companies in 30 countries worldwide used the services of Azerbaijani satellites, with the main users being companies from the USA, Great Britain, France, Germany, and Malaysia.

A year ago, "Azerkosmos" launched the production of a new satellite with higher data to replace the lost "Azersky."
