The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has responded to criticism from the Canadian Prime Minister over the establishment of a checkpoint by Azerbaijan on the border with Armenia. On April 25, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed deep concern about the checkpoint, which is located in the Lachin corridor, the only land connection between Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia.

In a statement on April 26, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry defended the creation of the checkpoint, citing Azerbaijan's legitimate right to establish border control within the framework of all international norms. The measure was necessary due to Armenia's military provocations and its violation of the Trilateral Statement of November 10, 2020, which included using the road for transportation of weapons and military personnel.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry further emphasized that the checkpoint will not close the road, and entry and exit to Azerbaijan will be monitored to prevent illegal activity. The Foreign Ministry also guaranteed transparency and regular travel of Armenian residents living in the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan in both directions.

Prime Minister Trudeau had called on the Azerbaijani authorities to reopen the Lachin corridor, emphasizing its importance for ensuring the free movement of people and goods, and promoting peace and stability in the region.
