18,000 cattle killed in Texas dairy farm fire

A dairy farm in west Texas experienced a massive fire, leaving officials stunned at the scale of livestock death. The South Fork Dairy farm near Dimmitt, Texas saw 18,000 head of cattle perish in the fire. Most of the animals were Holstein and Jersey cows in a holding pen before being milked. The fire was believed to have been caused by a malfunction in equipment, although the exact cause is still under investigation. The cattle deaths represent around 90% of the farm's total herd and could amount to tens of millions of dollars in losses. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the AgriLife Extension Service are helping officials clean up the site.
